HOW MANY ULTRASOUND SCANS SHOULD HAVE THROUGHOUT PREGNANCY?


There are several important scan to perform throughout your pregnancy.

(1) Fetal viability scan (6-10 weeks)
  • Comfirms a normal intrauterine pregnancy.
  • Estimates and verifies fetal age.
  • Excludes abnormalities such as ectopic pregnancy or threatened miscarriage.
  • Detect fetal heart activity.
  • Determineds the presence of multiple pregnancies.
  • Identifies early gross fetal abnormalities.
  • Identifies abnormalities of the placenta, uterus, and other pelvic structures.

(2) Nuchal scan (11-14weeks)
  • Estimates fetal gestation.
  • Assesses risk of Down's syndrome by measurement of the nuchal translucency and presence of nasal bone.
  • Detects fetal heart activity.
  • Detects fetal abnormalities.
  • Determines number of fetuses.
(3) Detailed abnormality scan (18-23 weeks)
  • Assesses fetal age, growth and position.
  • Identifies congenital malformation.
  • Excludes multiple pregnancies.
  • Evaluates the placenta, amniotic fluid and remaining structures of the pelvis.
(4) Fetal growth scan (26-40weeks)
  • Assesses fetal health : growth, amniotic fluid volume, etc.
  • Doppler blood flow studies.
  • Rules out fetal abnormalities.
  • Assesses fetal presentation and position.
  • Localization of placenta.
